Early Years

Nursery Staff

Miss Ellul is the class teacher in the Nursery. She is supported by Miss Pyne (Nursery Nurse) and Miss Ansah (Teaching Assistant).

At St. Edward’s we are committed to developing the whole child through a broad and balanced curriculum. We ensure that we cover all areas of the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum.

The Early Years Foundation Stage consists of seven areas of learning and development. Within those areas of learning, there are 3 prime areas which are essential for your child’s development and learning.

Prime areas:

  • Communication and language
  • Physical development
  • Personal, social and emotional development

Specific areas:

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the world
  • Expressive arts and design

Nursery expectations

The children in Nursery are assessed against the Development Matters Age Bands throughout the year across all Areas of Learning. Children enter Nursery at 3 years old (36 months at least) and therefore they are expected to start the year as secure within the 22-36 month band or beginning in the 30-50 month age band.

Every two weeks in the Nursery, we have a cookery session. The children enjoy pouring, mixing and stirring the ingredients. The best part is eating the delicious food once it is ready.

The children like to mark make while they are in the Nursery. They use a range of mediums to explore different types of mark making activities

In Nursery, we read the book ‘Owl Babies’ and made our own owl babies. The children were using their fine motor skills to cut and stick various materials to create their puppets.
